Our ceramic lighting is handmade in Mullan Lighting’s ceramic studio in Mullan Village, Ireland – a working village on the Irish border where every shade is shaped and painted by hand, not moulded on a production line. The result is lighting with genuine texture and variation: no two pieces are ever quite identical.
We carry ceramic lighting across every room of the house – table lamps, pendants, ceiling lights, wall lights, and IP44-rated pendants safe for bathrooms – all made using the same locally sourced clays and hand-finished glazes.
How Our Ceramic Lighting Is Made
Each piece starts as raw clay, shaped by hand in Mullan’s own ceramic studio, then fired in their kiln. The colour finish – Black Clay, Blue Earth, Red Iron, or a marbled blend of tones – is applied and fired individually, so the exact depth and pattern varies slightly from piece to piece. This isn’t a flaw; it’s the point. A hand-glazed ceramic lamp will never look mass-produced, because it isn’t.

Because each shade is made to order rather than pulled from stock, ceramic pieces carry a longer lead time than our metal and glass ranges – typically 4-6 weeks from order to dispatch. If you’re working to a deadline, it’s worth building this into your planning, but for most customers the wait is part of what you’re paying for: a piece shaped specifically for your order, not one of thousands made in advance.

Colour Finishes
Our ceramic ranges are built around a small set of natural finishes, each achieved through the glazing and firing process rather than applied paint:
- Black Clay – a deep, dark tone with a coarse, crackled surface texture
- Blue Earth – cool, layered blue tones with an ombré effect, hand-painted piece by piece
- Red Iron – warm rust and terracotta shades, achieved using iron oxide in the glaze
- Marbled – swirling patterns from blending two clays, so every piece is genuinely one-of-a-kind
- Matt White Striped – a cleaner, more minimalist finish with a hand-carved striped texture
Because these are natural, hand-applied finishes, expect gentle variation from piece to piece – this is part of buying handmade ceramic rather than a factory-uniform product.
Why Choose Handmade Ceramic Lighting
Ceramic lighting brings something metal and glass fittings can’t: texture, warmth, and genuine one-off character. A hand-glazed shade catches light differently depending on the angle and the piece, and no two rooms with the same ceramic pendant will look quite identical.
It also means a longer wait than picking something off a shelf. Every shade in our ceramic range is shaped, glazed and fired specifically for your order in a small studio in rural Ireland – not a warehouse. If that trade-off suits your project, ceramic lighting offers a level of individual character you won’t find in mass-produced fittings.
