Table Lamps | Brass, Ceramic & Modern Designs

Table lamps do more than light a room. The right one adds warmth to a bedside table, focus to a desk, or character to a console table in the hallway.

At Great Lighting, our table lamps come in three main styles – solid brass, hand-glazed ceramic, and contemporary designs in concrete, metal and wood – all made by quality European manufacturers rather than mass-produced overseas.

Unlike cheap imports, these lamps are built to last. Brass develops a natural patina over decades. Ceramic glazes hold their finish indefinitely. Contemporary pieces use proper materials and construction rather than lightweight plastics. Whichever style suits your room, you’re buying a lamp meant to stay, not to be replaced in a few years.

Brass Table Lamps

Solid brass table lamps from Mullan Lighting, made to order in Ireland. Each lamp is crafted from genuine brass in antique, aged or polished finishes, paired with fabric or glass shades chosen to complement the metalwork.

Brass suits bedside tables, desks, console tables and reading corners. Unlacquered finishes will darken and develop character with handling and age. Lacquered finishes hold their original polish for a cleaner, more consistent look. Both are built on solid brass construction, not plated metal, so the material itself will outlast the finish trends around it.

Brass works particularly well in traditional and heritage-style rooms, though a well-chosen brass lamp with a simple shade can sit just as comfortably in a contemporary space.

Ceramic Table Lamps

Hand-glazed ceramic table lamps from Mullan Lighting, made in Ireland. Each piece is finished with reactive glazes, so no two lamps are quite the same – variation in tone and pattern comes from the firing process itself.

Ceramic lamps bring colour and texture to a room in a way brass and metal can’t. Bases range from smooth, contemporary forms to more textured, artisan shapes. They work well in living rooms, bedrooms and on hallway console tables, particularly where you want the lamp itself to be part of the decoration rather than just a light source.

As these are hand-finished pieces, ceramic lamps are made to order with a longer lead time than our other ranges – worth factoring in if you’re working to a deadline.

Modern Table Lamps

Contemporary table lamps from Sollux, made in Poland. These favour clean lines and simple geometric forms in concrete, metal and wood, built for minimalist and modern interiors.

Where brass and ceramic lamps lean toward warmth and character, modern designs are more restrained – a single strong material or shape doing the work, without ornamentation. Concrete bases pair well with industrial-style rooms; wood and matte metal finishes suit softer, more contemporary spaces.

These lamps work well as a pair on a console table for symmetry, or as a single statement piece on a desk or side table.

Choosing Between the Three

There’s no single “right” table lamp – it depends on the room and what you want the lamp to do.

For lasting warmth and traditional character: brass. It suits rooms that will evolve over the years, since the material only improves with age.

For a distinctive, one-of-a-kind piece: ceramic. Each lamp’s glaze is unique, so it works well as a genuine focal point rather than a purely functional fixture.

For clean, understated modern rooms: contemporary designs in concrete, metal or wood. These add interest through form and material rather than colour or ornamentation.

Many of our customers mix styles across a room – a brass lamp on one side table, something more sculptural on the other – rather than sticking rigidly to one look throughout.

Why European Craftsmanship Matters

Our table lamps come from two manufacturers: Mullan Lighting in Ireland, who hand-finish brass and hand-glaze ceramic pieces, and Sollux in Poland, who produce contemporary designs to proper construction standards. Neither works with the mass-production methods used for cheap imported lighting.

This means a higher price than a supermarket or budget furniture lamp, but it also means proper wiring, solid materials, and a finish that’s built to hold up for years of daily use – not just to look good on a shelf for a season.
